Blue Book Listing 8.07

Genetic Photosensitivity Disorders (e.g., Xeroderma Pigmentosum)

Genetic conditions causing extreme sun sensitivity and increased skin cancer risk.

What you have to prove

Show xeroderma pigmentosum, OR other genetic photosensitivity disorders establishing inability to function outside of a highly protected environment for a continuous period of at least 12 months.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Genetic testing confirming the diagnosis, dermatology and oncology records, and photographs of skin damage.

Common misconceptions

Xeroderma pigmentosum qualifies essentially automatically. Less severe photosensitivity disorders require documentation of functional inability to tolerate normal environments.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
