What you have to prove
Extensive skin lesions involving the oral cavity, perineum, or axillae that persist for at least 3 months despite continuing treatment as prescribed.
Medical evidence SSA expects
Dermatologist records, biopsy results, photographs, and treatment history including immunosuppressants.
Common misconceptions
Pemphigus on effective treatment may not show persistent extensive lesions. Epidermolysis bullosa simplex variants rarely qualify; dystrophic or junctional forms qualify more readily.
Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational
Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with
your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our
appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
