Blue Book Listing 8.04

Chronic Infections of the Skin or Mucous Membranes

Fungal, bacterial, or viral infections unresponsive to treatment.

What you have to prove

Extensive fungating or extensive ulcerating skin lesions persisting for at least 3 months despite continuing treatment as prescribed.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Culture results, dermatology records, wound care documentation, and photographs.

Common misconceptions

HIV-related Kaposi sarcoma lesions and similar presentations may be evaluated here or under 14.11 — adjudicators will use the most favorable listing.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
