Blue Book Listing 11.08

Spinal Cord Disorders

Traumatic or disease-related injury to the spinal cord.

What you have to prove

Show one of: (A) complete loss of function, as described in 11.08A, that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months; OR (B) disorganization of motor function in two extremities with extreme limitation; OR (C) marked limitation in physical functioning AND in one area of mental functioning.

Medical evidence SSA expects

MRI/CT of the spine, neurology and physiatry records, functional assessments, American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale, and rehabilitation records.

Common misconceptions

Incomplete spinal cord injuries with significant residual function may not meet the listing. Complete injuries (ASIA A) at cervical or high thoracic levels typically qualify.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
