Blue Book Listing 11.02

Epilepsy

Recurrent seizures that persist despite prescribed treatment.

What you have to prove

Qualify via: (1) generalized tonic-clonic seizures at least once a month for 3 consecutive months despite treatment, OR (2) dyscognitive seizures at least once a week for 3 consecutive months, OR (3) generalized tonic-clonic seizures at least once every 2 months for 4 months WITH a marked limitation in physical functioning, understanding/applying information, interacting with others, concentrating/persisting, or adapting.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Neurologist records, EEG results, medication list with blood levels confirming compliance, seizure diary, MRI/CT of brain, and witness statements from family.

Common misconceptions

Missing medication doses will often disqualify you — SSA wants documented adherence via blood levels. Also, seizures must be witnessed or documented; self-reported seizures without corroboration are weighted less.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
