Blue Book Listing 11.10

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS / Lou Gehrig's Disease)

Progressive motor neuron disease affecting voluntary muscles.

What you have to prove

ALS established by clinical and laboratory findings in accordance with generally accepted medical standards.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Neurologist's diagnosis (ideally from a specialist or ALS center), EMG/NCS, and documentation of upper and lower motor neuron signs.

Common misconceptions

ALS is a Compassionate Allowance — approvals typically within weeks of application. The 5-month SSDI waiting period was eliminated for ALS in 2021.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
