Chronic Pulmonary Insufficiency Due to Neuromuscular Disorder

Breathing impairment from muscular dystrophy, ALS, or similar neuromuscular disease.

What you have to prove

Show either (1) maximal voluntary ventilation equal to or less than 40 percent of predicted, OR (2) a need for invasive mechanical ventilation or noninvasive ventilation for at least 8 hours per day.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Pulmonary function tests, ventilator logs, sleep studies, and neurology evaluations confirming the underlying neuromuscular disorder.

Common misconceptions

Daytime-only BiPAP usually doesn't meet the 8-hour threshold. Continuous overnight ventilation plus daytime support typically does.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
