Cystic Fibrosis

Genetic disorder affecting lungs, pancreas, and other organs.

What you have to prove

Qualify via: (1) FEV1 at or below the listed table values; OR (2) exacerbations requiring IV or nebulized antibiotic treatment at least 3 times in 12 months; OR (3) pulmonary hemoptysis requiring vascular embolization or surgery; OR (4) pulmonary hypertension meeting criteria; OR (5) respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation or noninvasive ventilation twice in 12 months.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Spirometry, sweat chloride testing confirming diagnosis, pulmonary records, chest CT, hospital admission records, and medication history.

Common misconceptions

CF patients doing well on modern therapies (Trikafta, Kalydeco) may not meet the listing even though they have CF. The listing requires documented ongoing impairment despite treatment.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
