What you have to prove
FEV1 at or below SSA's table values, which are based on your height. For a 5'8" adult, FEV1 ≤ 1.45 L meets the listing. Also qualifies with chronic impairment of gas exchange (ABG values) or hospitalizations for respiratory failure.
Medical evidence SSA expects
Spirometry (post-bronchodilator), arterial blood gas studies, high-resolution CT, and hospitalization records. Spirometry must be performed under SSA-compliant conditions.
Common misconceptions
Home pulse-oximeter readings aren't accepted — SSA wants formal ABG results. Smoking history doesn't disqualify you, but continued smoking may be used in credibility assessments.
