Blue Book Listing 14.09

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Autoimmune inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting joints symmetrically.

What you have to prove

Meet via: (1) persistent inflammation or persistent deformity of one or more major peripheral weight-bearing joints resulting in inability to ambulate effectively, OR (2) inflammation/deformity of one or more peripheral joints in each upper extremity resulting in inability to perform fine/gross movements, OR (3) involvement of two or more organs/body systems.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Rheumatologist records, RF, anti-CCP, ESR, CRP, imaging of affected joints, DMARD and biologic treatment history.

Common misconceptions

Patients well-controlled on biologics (Humira, Enbrel, etc.) often don't meet listings. Cases with erosive damage on imaging or failure of multiple DMARDs qualify more easily.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
