What you have to prove
Meet listing via: (1) one or more documented infections resistant to treatment requiring IV antimicrobials at least 3 times in 12 months; OR (2) stem cell transplantation (automatic for 12 months); OR (3) repeated manifestations with marked limitation.
Medical evidence SSA expects
Immunology records, quantitative immunoglobulins, lymphocyte subset analysis, genetic testing for primary immunodeficiency, and infection and treatment records.
Common misconceptions
CVID patients on IVIG who have infrequent infections may not qualify. Primary combined immunodeficiency with recurrent severe infections typically does.
Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational
Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with
your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our
appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
