What you have to prove
Meet listing if: (1) a surgical reconstruction or arthrodesis of a major weight-bearing joint, AND (2) an inability to ambulate effectively that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 consecutive months from the date of surgery.
Medical evidence SSA expects
Operative reports, post-operative imaging, physical therapy notes, and assistive device prescriptions.
Common misconceptions
Recovery faster than 12 months generally disqualifies — SSA wants to see the duration threshold met before approval. Successful knee or hip replacements that return patients to work after 6-9 months don't qualify.
Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational
Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with
your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our
appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
