Disorders of Hemostasis, Including Hemophilia and Thrombocytopenia

Bleeding or clotting disorders requiring ongoing treatment.

What you have to prove

Show one of: (A) repeated complications of hemorrhage despite prescribed treatment (three or more hospitalizations within 12 months at least 30 days apart, each requiring transfusion); OR (B) thrombosis and embolism — three or more thromboembolic events within 12 months at least 30 days apart despite prescribed anticoagulant treatment.

Medical evidence SSA expects

CBC trends, PT/PTT, factor level assays, hospitalization records for each event, and hematologist notes.

Common misconceptions

Well-controlled hemophilia on prophylactic factor therapy rarely meets the listing. Patients with inhibitors or repeated bleeds despite treatment qualify more readily.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
