Blue Book Listing 2.03

Contraction of the Visual Field in the Better Eye

Narrowed peripheral vision (tunnel vision) from glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, or other causes.

What you have to prove

Show one of: (1) the widest diameter subtending an angle around the point of fixation no greater than 20 degrees, OR (2) a mean deviation of -22 or worse, OR (3) a visual field efficiency of 20 percent or less.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Visual field testing (Humphrey perimetry or Goldmann), repeated on separate occasions to confirm stability, with official perimetry reports.

Common misconceptions

Self-reported tunnel vision isn't enough — formal visual field testing with specific numeric results is required. Test reliability indices must be acceptable.
