Blue Book Listing 5.06

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis)

Chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract with flares, strictures, or malabsorption.

What you have to prove

Qualify via: (1) obstruction of stenotic areas requiring hospitalization for intestinal decompression or surgery within 6 months twice, OR (2) two of the following despite prescribed treatment within 6 months: anemia, low serum albumin, tender abdominal mass with pain not controlled, perineal disease requiring surgery, involuntary weight loss of 10%+, or need for daily supplemental nutrition via catheter.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Endoscopy and colonoscopy reports, biopsy results, imaging (CT/MRI), hospital admission records, lab work (CBC, CMP, albumin), weight records, and medication history including biologics.

Common misconceptions

Well-controlled IBD rarely qualifies on the listing alone. Many applicants with moderate disease are approved only after a Medical-Vocational Allowance analysis shows unpredictable flares prevent sustained work.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
