Symptomatic Congenital Heart Disease

Heart conditions present at birth that cause ongoing problems in adulthood.

What you have to prove

Meet via: (1) cyanosis at rest with specific hematocrit, oxygen saturation, or pulmonary vascular resistance values; OR (2) intermittent right-to-left shunting with documentation of specific oxygen saturation levels; OR (3) secondary pulmonary vascular obstructive disease with specified pulmonary pressures.

Medical evidence SSA expects

Echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization, pulmonary function testing, ABG analysis, and pediatric and adult cardiology records.

Common misconceptions

Many adults with surgically corrected congenital heart disease don't qualify because correction resolves the hemodynamic findings SSA requires.

Didn't meet the listing? You can still qualify via a Medical-Vocational Allowance — SSA's determination that your residual functional capacity, combined with your age, education, and work history, leaves no jobs you can do. See our appeals guide for what to do after an initial denial.
